Why Your Body Needs Detoxification

October 24, 2020

Our body needs metabolic detoxification (not just a quick detox!) to literally survive. If your body’s natural detoxification isn’t working properly you have serious problems.

For example, if you had cirrhosis (scarring of the liver due to chronic liver inflammation from alcohol abuse, hepatitis, and many other causes)—your liver can’t clear toxins properly because of all of the scar tissue.

These can build up in the brain causing mental confusion, memory problems, and difficulty concentrating. This is an extreme example and I am using it to point out that most of us are generally detoxifying well.

Even though you probably don’t have cirrhosis, you are exposed to thousands of chemicals daily. Even if you are eating well, the amount of nutrients in your foods are not as high as they once were. Also, the chemicals you are exposed to on a regular basis are astronomical. This combination makes it harder for your liver to work optimally.

Where do toxins come from??

Humans have always been exposed to toxins. This is why we have these natural detoxification processes built in. Originally, our exposure was low and consisted mostly of natural products in foods, smoke from cooking fires, and breakdown products from hormones we naturally produce. Nowadays, there are chemicals in everything!

For example: medications, foods, pesticides, cleaning products, cosmetics, building products, paints, car fumes, perfumes, smoke from fires, among many others!

Also, when we are stressed out, we drink too much, use too many drugs, eat a lot of sugar, and other junk food. We don’t take time to make meals and opt for fast food instead. We can’t sleep and don’t rest as much as we should. Our bodies are in a constant state of overload!

Will a detox help?

By doing a ‘detox’ you are making less work for your liver. While this is good for a short period of time, if you are not trying to reduce your exposure on a regular basis the benefits will be short lived.

You also need to do a detox (ie. reducing your toxin burden and getting the proper nutrients to help your liver with phase 1&2 detoxification) correctly so you don’t cause more harm than good.
